Instructions for the 2017-2018 Application for the Journey School Lottery (or “Lottery Application”)

GENERAL INFORMATION

Application Requirements

Thank you for your interest in applying for Journey School’s 2017-2018 Lottery that will be held on the Journey School campus on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at 3:00 p.m.

  1. The lottery is a random, public drawing and all are invited to attend, however, attendance is not mandatory.
  2. Please complete one online 2017-18 Lottery Application for each child you wish to enroll. All sections of the application must be completed for the application to be processed.
  3. Completed Lottery Applications must be submitted via the Journey School website no later than Monday, February 28, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. to be considered for the lottery. See Submission Requirements section below for complete submission instructions.
  4. The online application will close at 11:59 p.m. on February 28, 2017, and therefore, no late applications will be accepted.
  5. Incomplete applications will not be submitted to the lottery.
Non-Discrimination Policy

Journey School does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, disability, national origin, gender identity, nor on any other basis prohibited by law, in its admission policy, or in the conduct of its educational, recreational, athletic, or aid programs.

Age Eligibility for the Lottery

Journey School applicants must be at least 5 years of age by December 2, 2017 in order to be considered for the 2017-18 Application Lottery at Journey School. Please refer to the 2017-2018 Grade Placement By Date of Birth Chart or to the Age Requirements summary below for more details.

Residency

Student must be a resident of the State of California to be eligible to enroll in a California Charter School. In addition:

  1. Lottery preference will be given to those who reside in the Capistrano Unified School District. District boundaries may be found on the school finder section of CUSD’s website at http://capousd.ca.schoolloop.com/.
  2. Proof of Residency is required as part of the admissions process. Please see our Residency Requirements below for details.

STUDENT INFORMATION

Student’s Name

Please provide your child’s complete legal name as indicated on his/her birth certificate. Indicate if your child prefers to go by a nickname or has a different preferred name.

Grade-Level Placement

At the pinnacle of the Waldorf curriculum is developmentally appropriate learning that is geared toward the whole child – mentally, physically, and emotionally. Therefore, it is of particular importance that students are placed in a grade according to our Grade Placement by Date of Birth Chart. For a quick view of our age requirements, please see our Age Requirements summary below. Please note that due to high enrollment demand in our Grades classes, we do not make exceptions to this policy.

FAMILY INFORMATION

Please complete the following parent/guardian information:

  1. Current address and contact information.
  2. Indicate with whom your child lives. If your child has two residences, please state where your child resides most frequently.
  3. Please list the contact name and all telephone numbers of the person you would like us to call regarding the application.
  4. Please tell us how you heard about Journey School.

WALDORF EDUCATION INFORMATION

It is very important to the culture of Journey School that all parents/guardians are in complete alignment with our principles and guidelines. To help ensure this, we offer numerous educational opportunities throughout the year as part of our Parent University. The “Prospective Parents” section of our website is also an excellent resource for literature and videos about Waldorf Education. We encourage parents to be fully informed about Waldorf Education prior to making a decision about applying to our school. To this end, our Lottery Application process includes the following five Confirmations:

  1. At least one parent or guardian must attend an “adult only” Journey School Tour. Our Walk Through the Grades Tour is a 2 1⁄2 hour, interactive campus tour that will peek into the classrooms while school is in session. (Oct-Feb). Sign up for an upcoming tour here.

AGE REQUIREMENTS FOR 2017-2018

Children who turn six years old by June 1st are considered for first grade the following
September. Recognizing that children do not develop and mature at the same rate, we look at three major development areas: large and small motor development, language development, and social/emotional behavior. The responsibility for the assessment lies with the kindergarten teachers and the first grade teacher.

In order to ensure proper grade placement in the lottery, we require submission of a birth document. Acceptable documents include (but are not limited to) a child’s birth certificate, passport, or hospital record.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

Journey School is chartered under the Capistrano Unified School District and gives placement preference to students who reside within its boundaries. The following items may be used to provide Proof of California Residency for the student’s address:

  • Current gas, electric, water OR sewage bill – Must be the full bill, show the service address or location; current within the last 60 days and in at least one of the Caretaker’s names. We cannot accept disconnection, final, or shut-off notices.
  • Current mortgage statement – Must be the full statement, show the property address; within the last 60 days and be in one of the Caretaker’s names.
  • Current lease agreement – Must identify the current address, tenant’s name(s), the terms (dates include) of the lease as well as the signature page with both landlord and tenant signatures. We are unable to accept month-to-month lease agreements that are not dated within the last 60 days.
  • Property Tax Statement – Must have at least one Caretaker’s name and the address.
  • Voter Registration Card – This cannot be the application. It must be the actual card.
  • Pay Stub – Must have at least one Caretaker’s name and the address.
  • Letter from a Government Agency – This must have at least one Caretaker’s name and the address.

Adequate documentation is required to be given the correct lottery preference.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

California schools are required to check immunization records for all new student admissions for Kindergarten/TK through 12th grade and all 7th graders before entry. All applicants to the Journey School lottery must be fully compliant with the expectations and requirements of the State of California in order for their child to be admitted to the school. It is Journey School’s intention to be fair and legal in all of our enrollment practices and it is not our intention to exclude or cause undue stress on any eligible applicants from applying due to our enrollment expectations.
