5th Grade

Alyson Smith

Alyson Smith is thrilled to lead her students for a third year. She has a B.A. in Anthropology from UC, San Diego with concentrations in Humanities, Science and Education.  She also holds a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from UC, Irvine.  Additionally, Ms. Smith will graduate next spring from Rudolph Steiner College with a Waldorf Teaching Certificate and Master’s Degree.

Ms. Smith has worked with children as an educator and coach for more than a decade. Prior to coming to Journey School, she was at Olson Elementary School in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District where she was a standout teacher for a 2nd/3rd grade combo class.  She was pink-slipped from that position due to budget cuts and her lack of tenure.

Though difficult at the time, this turning point was a huge blessing for both Ms. Smith and Journey School as she discovered her life’s calling as a Waldorf Teacher.  At the time, her former principal knew she would regret letting her go, “Alyson would be the first teacher I’d hire back if given the opportunity.” Her master teacher concurred, “Alyson taught the 2nd/3rd combo class better than I could have done as a 30-year teaching veteran.  She naturally taught like a master teacher.”

Ms. Smith is especially passionate about environmental education and equipping students with 21st century skills. She is grateful for teaching such a talented and close group of students.  She also appreciates the commitment of her parents tremendously.  Away from school, Ms. Smith enjoys exercising, gardening, and spending time with her new husband, family, and many friends in the area.  Ms. Smith was raised in San Clemente.
