Encountering Jack Frost

Jack Frost has paid a visit to our gardens as winter approaches, and the students are experiencing first hand what Jack Frost does to plants and how they might help.

The 6th grade students are especially enjoying their time in the garden on Wednesday mornings. They complete tasks previously performed by volunteers. In fact, Master Gardener Erik has such trust in Ms. Kelley’s students that he is taking a well deserved rest during December. We invite everyone to join us in the Green Heart Garden on Wednesdays from 8:30-10am.

Here are a few additional updates:

  • Many thanks to the Wavricks and Whiteakers who covered planter boxes when temperatures dipped below 30 degrees.
  • As a permanent solution, it would be great if someone donated burlap blankets for each planter box. Please click here to be a Green Hero.
  • The remaining 4 pest control cages for the 3rd Grade Garden will be built Friday. Feel free to stop by if you can give your time after drop-off Friday morning.

Finally, Happy Fall, and keep your eyes out for:

  • Jack Frost
  • Leaves changing magical colors
  • Birds and squirrels harvesting seeds and pine cones for the winter
  • White Great Egrets flying over the school with their golden beaks
  • And, “dragon breath” when our warm breath hits the cold morning air
