Independent Study – FAQs

For what grades does Journey School offer Independent Study?

For the 2023-24 school year, we are offering homebased and hybrid classes for Kindergarten through 5th grade and homebased-only classes for 6th graders.

What are the options for Independent Study?

  • Kindergarten Hybrid Class  – Students learn at home 2 days each week and attend classes on the Journey School campus 3 days a week.
  • Grades 1-5 Hybrid Class – Students learn at home 3 days each week and attend classes on the Journey School campus 2 days a week.
  • Homeschool Class – With the support of credentialed teachers, students learn at home 5 days a week.

What curriculum do you use?

Our unique curriculum is compiled and created by our Waldorf certified teachers. It is specific to our school and the needs of our students. We also use supplemental curriculum in the grades classes for language arts and math. For math, we use Primary Mathematics by Singapore Math and for language arts, the curriculum is a compilation from a variety of resources including (but not limited to): All About Reading, Step Up to Writing, Words Their Way, and Teaching Reading and Writing in Waldorf Schools. Our kindergarten is play-based so a formal reading and writing program is not used or assigned.

How many days a week are the hybrid classes on campus?

Our Kindergarten Hybrid classes are on campus three days a week. The schedule is currently Monday, Wednesday and Friday, however, this is subject to change if more kindergarten classes are added. Campus days are 9am-1pm, except on Wednesday classes are held from 9am-12:30pm.

Our 1-5 grade Hybrid classes are on campus 2 days a week; Wednesday from 9:00-12:30 and Fridays from 9:00-1:10.

What classes do the grades 1-5 children participate in while on campus?

In the 2022-2023 school year, we offer two classes: a 1st/2nd grade combo class and the 3rd-5th grade combo class. Students participate in art, music, games, handwork, community building and Earthroots while on campus.  Students also have opportunities to participate in off-campus field trips.

What does a hybrid kindergarten day look like?

Generally, a kindergarten day starts with jump rope and purposeful work. Students then gather with their teacher for circle time; followed by a nature walk on one of the many nearby nature trails. “Active play” then takes place outside allowing students opportunities to use their imaginations as they interact with peers. The children will then walk back to school for a healthy snack and creative play. The day will end with a story before heading home.

What is the typical workload for children in kindergarten?

The workload for children in kindergarten is going to be similar to what they are already doing at home. We expect children to participate in household chores, physical activity, singing, preparation of meals, painting/drawing, creative play, and arts and crafts. All of the materials and curriculum are provided for the families each month.

What is the typical workload for students in the grades?

Depending on the child, a typical day’s work can take anywhere from 2-6 hours. Weekly work consists of Main Lesson, math, language arts, music, art, craft, physical education, chores, and nature studies. The teachers provide all of the lessons, samples, and supplies so parents are free from spending hours each night looking for creative lessons. Hybrid students receive art, craft, and music lessons while on campus.

Does the program cost any money?

Journey School is a public charter school. It does not cost any money to apply or attend. In addition, the families are provided all of the curriculum and supplies.

Does the school give a stipend or funds to families?

While parents do not have access to school funds, all of the materials and curriculum your child will need for a successful school year are provided.  For students enrolled in the home-based (home only) class, supplemental and personalized programs and materials may be available on an individualized basis depending on your child’s academic goals and teacher assessment.

Is parent participation is required?

No, although there are many opportunities throughout the school year for parents to volunteer in the classroom and through Parent Cabinet events and activities.

What is the best way to prepare my child for Independent Study at Journey School?

There are a few things you can do to set your family up for success early:

  • Greatly reduce or eliminate all media and screen time for your child. We strive for children to be screen-free from Sunday to Friday and all week for Kindergarteners.
  • Try to set up strong rhythms at home. What will your days and weeks look like? Don’t worry if this is new for you, we can help with this!
  • Have your child start doing chores at home. Have your child clean their room, empty the dishwasher, help with laundry and take care of plants and animals.
  • Get ready for your bond to grow with your child. We regularly hear that teaching your child at home helps rebuild bonds and keeps them strong.
